I was only put in charge three weeks ago which gives me enough reason to worry about how it's going to turn out. We really only have one song learned which tells you exactly how much work we have to do before the 13th. I'm a little overwhelmed but I'm sure everything will work out in the end. After church my husband and I were talking with someone about getting keys for a Saturday practice this weekend. We got talking and he mentioned that he writes music. I then mentioned that I was a vocal performance major and he asked me if I would be interested in singing a few of his songs in his studio. He and another local artist write together and they have been looking for a vocalist. I was so excited. It's been so long since I have been in a recording studio. I guess we'll see how it goes...if anything it will be really fun to do a little recording!

The Closet Performer

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PyikP5QYskM/SwrmfNzDTYI/AAAAAAAAAa4/vWqb5xeDNms/s320/em.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407387726565821826" />
(This picture was taken by my sister..isn't she amazing?!)

I feel like I have to hide when I practice. Not because I'm afraid to sing or practice in front of people...to be honest I am afraid people will get annoyed. Practicing whether it's piano, guitar, or voice is usually not beautiful. Paul's Mom told me that when Paul was younger they never knew he could really play the Saxophone. He was taking lessons and was in band, but they never heard anything but phrases of music he struggled with, played over and over again.
I guess I struggle with something Paul didn't, he's usually better than me at most things but I never thought it would extend to music.
Why should anyone else have to endure the ugly part of music? I have come to the conclusion that this is the reason why most people don't practice. All anyone wants is the performance part of music, the part that comes with adrenaline, lights, and a stage.
As a result since moving to Texas I have become a closet performer. I have a shelf cleared in my closet where my keyboard sits. I have found a way to plug the keyboard in by fishing the wire underneath the door to the plug outside. Once I am in the closet I reach up to the top shelf where the towels are located and stuff one in the opening between the door and the floor. At this point I am committed to at least an hour of practice. The acoustics are terrible....a lot of dead space, and my voice doesn't carry beyond the shelf in front of me. The closet seems to work for now, but I still find myself hitting the walls when I stretch my arms back to help me hit a high note. Sometimes it gets a little boring when I've been staring at my cleaning products for a solid hour proclaiming my love or disgust for them.
I just keep telling myself that at sometime in the future I will have a house where I can make all the ugly music I want while Paul is away at work. Until then...I fear the closet and I continue to grow closer.

Repertoire List

Art Songs

English
If music be the food of love, Henry Purcell
Love’s Philosophy, Roger Quilter
I attempt from love sickness, Henry Purcell

Italian
O del mio amato ben, Stefano Donaudy
Come l’allodoletta, Stefano Donaudy
Ridente la calma, Wolfgang Amadeus
Sebben, crudele, Antonio Cladara
Le Violette, Alessandro Scarlatti
Nel cor più non mi sento, Giovanni Paisiello
Pur dicesti, o bocca bella, Antonio Lotti
Alma del core, Antonio Caldara
Se tu m’mami, F.J. Her love for music
grew as she sang often at home and for family events. She has had
extensive vocal and conducting experience her church and community.
Emily is pursuing a BS in Vocal Performance at Utah Valley University
where she will be graduating in Spring of 2010. Last spring she
participated in an Opera Workshop Class where she took on the role of
Cherubino in the "Marriage of Figaro". She currently is participating
in UVU's Master Works Chorale and Chamber Choir, which performed the
Brahms Requiem Spring of 2009. While preparing for her upcoming Senior
Recital in March, she has recently become the conductor of her church
choir, and is currently getting them ready for their Christmas Program
in December.
